AI and school rules

Rules for AI differ by school, by course, and even by assignment. Before you use any AI tool for coursework: check the syllabus, ask your instructor if it’s unclear, disclose and cite any AI use the way they ask, and use AI as a tutor, never a ghostwriter.

1. Check your syllabus

Look for a section on AI, generative AI, or academic integrity. Some courses ban AI completely, some allow it for certain steps (brainstorming, studying), and some allow it with disclosure. When the syllabus and the assignment instructions disagree, follow the more specific one, and ask.

2. Ask your instructor

If it isn’t clear, ask before you start, in writing, so you have the answer saved. A short email works:

Hi Professor ___, for [assignment], am I allowed to use AI tools to [quiz myself on the readings / organize my notes / format citations]? If yes, how would you like me to disclose it? Thanks!

3. Disclose and cite AI use

If your instructor allows AI, follow their disclosure rules. If they want a formal citation, use the official style guidance:

Keep your chats or prompts in case you’re asked how you used the tool.

4. Tutor, not ghostwriter

Usually OK (check your course): quizzing yourself, explaining a concept another way, making flashcards from your notes, finding sources to read, formatting citations you’ve checked.
Not OK: having AI write work you hand in as your own, answer graded questions, or take quizzes or exams; citing sources you haven’t read; trying to hide AI use from your instructor or from plagiarism or AI-detection checks.
