Best AI tool for citations

For most college students, the best tool for citations is Zotero: it’s free, saves sources from your browser in one click, and formats APA, MLA, Chicago, and thousands of other styles directly in Word or Google Docs. For a one-off bibliography with no account, use ZoteroBib (also free). Use an AI search tool like Perplexity to find sources, then open and read each one yourself. Don’t ask a chatbot to write your citations from memory: AI chatbots can make up references that look real but don’t exist.

Our picks

1. Zotero: best overall, free

A free, open-source reference manager from a nonprofit (zotero.org). The browser connector grabs the citation details and PDF. Word processor plugins insert in-text citations and build the bibliography as you write. Free sync storage is 300 MB, with more available for a small yearly fee (storage pricing).

2. ZoteroBib: fastest for one paper, free

No account and no install. Paste a URL, DOI, or ISBN and copy out a formatted bibliography. It’s free and ad-free (ZoteroBib FAQ).

3. Perplexity: best AI for finding sources

An AI search engine that shows the links behind each answer. That makes it a useful starting point for finding real articles to read. Verified students can get Education Pro for $10/month (Perplexity students). Treat its answers as leads, not as sources to cite.

Worked example: use AI to learn

Goal: build a correct APA reference list for a sociology paper and actually learn the format along the way.

  1. Find sources. Ask Perplexity a research question, and also search your library database. Open every link it gives you. If you can’t find the source, or it doesn’t say what the answer claimed, drop it.
  2. Save what you read. Click the Zotero Connector on each article you’ll use. Check the author, year, title, and DOI against the actual article. Imports are sometimes wrong.
  3. Cite as you write. Use the Zotero plugin in Word or Google Docs to insert in-text citations, then generate the bibliography.
  4. Learn the rules, don’t just trust them. Ask an AI to explain the format, not to produce the citation: Here is one APA 7 reference from my list. Don’t rewrite it. Explain what each part is, and tell me if anything looks off (capitalization, italics, DOI format) so I can fix it myself. [paste one reference]
  5. If you used AI in the paper itself (for brainstorming, say), cite or disclose it the way your instructor asks. See APA’s AI references guide and MLA’s guidance on citing generative AI.

What your instructor may not allow

  • AI-found sources you haven’t read. Citing a source you didn’t read, or one an AI made up, can count as fabrication.
  • AI-generated text. If any wording or ideas came from an AI, many instructors require you to disclose or cite it. Some ban AI entirely for writing assignments.
  • Specific databases or styles. Some courses require peer-reviewed sources from the library, or a specific style edition (APA 7, MLA 9).
  • Annotated bibliographies. When the annotations are the graded part, AI-written annotations may not be allowed.

Not sure? Read the AI section of your syllabus and ask your instructor before you start. More in AI and school rules.

FAQ

What is the best free citation tool for college students?

Zotero is free and open-source. It saves sources from your browser and formats APA, MLA, Chicago, and thousands of other styles in Word and Google Docs. ZoteroBib is a free, no-account option for a single bibliography.

Can ChatGPT make my citations?

It can format details you give it, but don't ask a chatbot to come up with sources or citations from memory. AI chatbots can make up references that look real. Always use the real source and check each detail.

Does Perplexity have a student discount?

Yes. As of 2026-10-18, verified students can get Perplexity Education Pro for $10 per month. Regular Pro is listed at $17 per month billed annually.

How do I cite AI tools in APA or MLA?

APA and MLA both publish official guidance on citing generative AI. Follow those pages, and follow your instructor's rules for disclosing how you used AI.

Is using a citation generator cheating?

No. Reference managers and citation generators are normally allowed. Just double-check every entry, and make sure you've actually read every source you cite.
